A method has been devised to determine the acid!base parameters of ref
erence liquids as absolute numbers, and not as values relative to a co
nventional set of parameters for water. Contact angle measurements are
employed, using three liquids on three solids. The theory calls for t
he solution of nine simultaneous, nonlinear equations in nine variable
s-and unreasonably formidable task. A preliminary set of solutions has
been computed, for one set of polar liquids on five solids. These res
ults must be rejected on grounds of physical reasonableness. They also
fail the test of predicting liquid-liquid interfacial tension, which
for miscible liquids must be negative or zero.
