Abstract
Developments in conventional shell and tube heat exchangers and compac t heat exchangers leading to improvement in industrial heat transfer a re presented. For shell a and tube exchangers different designs and te chniques for improving shell side and tube side performance are discus sed. The shell side improvements centre around better conversion of pr essure drop into heat transfer by innovative baffle designs. The tube side enhancement techniques are briefly illustrated with an example of tube inserts, Discussion on compact heat exchangers covers various ty pes of exchangers and their operating ranges, applications and their s pecific benefits, The principle types covered are plate heat exchanger s, plate fin exchangers and printed circuit exchangers. Finally, examp les of boiling of single component fluids and mixtures are used to ill ustrate how process specific requirements need to be taken into accoun t to improve heat transfer when dealing with applications, other than those involving straightforward single phase duties.
