WIRELESS systems such as cellular, personal communications services (P
CS), and personal communications networks (PCN) must provide a combina
tion of coverage, capacity, and service quality. In addition, governme
nt regulations may impose other requirements such as position location
for emergency ''911'' service. Unfortunately, conventional static wir
eless infrastructures often cannot satisfy dynamic network needs nor p
rovide special services such as position location. Smart-antenna syste
ms, however, offer a cost-effective approach for improving performance
in a controllable dynamic system. This first article in a two-part se
ries overviews the structure and implementation of these systems.
