Abstract
CELLULAR-telephone handsets are perhaps the most-recognized product in wireless communications, However, handsets only represent half of the communications story. The other half is the base station, which relay s calls from the handset to the telephone network and back. Similar to other wireless designs, manufacturers are balancing the concepts of s hrinking the size and increasing the performance of this integral syst em while keeping costs low. This balancing act recently became more st able with the TMS320C6201 digital signal processor (DSP) from Texas In struments, Inc. (Houston, TX).
