Abstract
A little known embedding theorem due to Campbell(1) is discussed and e mployed to establish the local embedding of four-dimensional gravitati onal and electromagnetic plane waves in five-dimensional Ricci-flat sp aces. In general, this theorem can be employed as a way of relating n- dimensional gravity to (n + 1)-dimensional vacuum theories.
