The composition of membrane phospholipids in exponential-and stationar
y-phase cells of Azospirillum brasilense was studied. The total conten
t of membrane phospholipids made up about 7% of dry cell mass and was
almost independent of the growth phase. Exponential-phase bacteria con
tained phosphatidylethanolamine (64.4%), phosphatidylglycerol (19.5%),
cardiolipin (9.2%), phosphatidic acid (5.1%), and phosphatidylinosito
l (1.8%). In the stationary phase, the phospholipid composition was qu
alitatively the same, although somewhat changed quantitatively.
