We analyze general possibilities of electronic implementations of chao
s controllers. We consider in particular two classes of chaos controll
ers: those based on the OGY approach, and occasional proportional feed
back (OFF) controllers. Influence of accuracy of digital implementatio
n of the OGY algorithm and its partial hardware implementation is disc
ussed in detail. We describe which parts of the algorithm can be imple
mented in hardware and how to build a feedback controller with compute
r-assisted goal determination. As a second task, we consider the OPF c
ontroller introduced by Hunt for stabilizing periodic solutions in aut
onomous chaotic systems. Its original version has a major drawback bec
ause it requires an external synchronizing signal. We describe a modif
ied version of Hunt's controller which obviates the need for an extern
al synchronizing signal. Advantages and disadvantages of both methods
from the implementation point of view are discussed in detail. (C) 199
