In this paper, the renewable energy vectors liquid hydrogen (LH2) and
methanol generated from atmospheric CO2 are compared with the conventi
onal crude oil-gasoline system. Both renewable concepts, liquid hydrog
en and methanol, lead to a drastic CO2 reduction compared to the fossi
l-based system. The comparison between the LH2 and methanol vector for
the transport sector shows nearly the same fuel cost and energy effic
iency but strong infrastructure advantages for methanol. (C) 1998 Inte
