T. Yura, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TYPES OF AXIAL ELONGATION AND THE PREVALENCE OF LATTICE DEGENERATION OF THE RETINA, Acta ophthalmologica Scandinavica, 76(1), 1998, pp. 90-95
Purpose: To assess the relationship between the prevalence of lattice
degeneration and the types of axial elongation. Methods: Nine hundred
seventy eyes of 542 highly myopic patients with axial length of 26.00-
31.99 mm were evaluated by using A-scan axial length measurements and
fundus examinations. Then the prevalence of lattice degeneration was c
ompared between eyes with posterior staphyloma and those without poste
rior staphyloma. Results: At each axial length, lattice degeneration w
as more frequent in eyes without posterior staphyloma (the entire eye
elongates) than those with posterior staphyloma (only the posterior po
le elongates). The difference was statistically significant (p<0.005-0
.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of lattice degeneration is influenced
by the types of axial elongation in high myopic eyes.
