Abstract
The origin of the ''cracks'' between the platelets in melt-processed R Ba2Cu3O7 superconductors is investigated experimentally. The results c onvincingly demonstrate that these cracks actually develop during soli dification. The relevance of this to the microstructural evolution dur ing melt processing and to the critical-current densities is discussed .
