M. Strnad et al., META-TOPOLIN, A HIGHLY-ACTIVE AROMATIC CYTOKININ FROM POPLAR LEAVES (POPULUS X CANADENSIS MOENCH, CV ROBUSTA), Phytochemistry, 45(2), 1997, pp. 213-218
A rapid analytical screening by high-performance liquid chromatography
combined with enzymelinked immunosorbent assay specific for N-6-(meta
-hydroxybenzyl)adenine and its 9-substituted derivatives revealed seve
ral regions of immunoactivity in extracts of mature poplar leaves (Pop
ulusxcanadensis Moench., cv. Robusta). The identity of the cross-react
ive compounds was investigated by UV and mass spectrometry and after p
ermethylation of unknown substances by gas chromatography-mass spectro
metry. Physico-chemical analysis indicated the putative cytokinins are
N-6-(meta-hydroxybenzyl)adenine and its 9-beta-D-ribofuranosyl or 9-b
eta-D-glucopyranosyl derivatives. The chemical structure was subsequen
tly confirmed by synthesis. For N-6(meta-hydroxybenzyl)adenine, a high
ly active aromatic cytokinin, we propose the trivial name 'meta-topoli
n'. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
