Neutron diffraction and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy were used to esta
blish the crystal structure of HoFe0.5Si2. Our data strongly suggest t
hat this compound crystallizes in the CeNiSi2-type structure. This stu
dy removes the uncertainties concerning the localization of the transi
tion metal in the heavy rare earth RFexSi2 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu) comp
ounds, previously described in the TbFeSi2-type structure. (C) 1998 El
