A crossed-beam apparatus has been employed in a spectroscopic study of
electrons photodetached from C- ions at a photon energy of 2.08 eV. M
easurements of the partial cross sections sigma and asymmetry paramete
rs beta for the hv + C- (D-2) --> C(D-1) + e(-) (ks, d) and hv + C- (S
-4) --> C(P-3) + e(-) (ks, d) processes yielded the following results:
sigma (D-2-D-1) = 5(2) Mb, sigma (S-4-P-3) = 12(3) Mb and beta(D-2-D-
1) = -0.93(7), beta (D-2-D-1) = -0.88(7). These are the first measurem
ents in the case of the D-2-D-1 transition.
