The room-temperature crystal structure of (NH4)(3)BiCl6 has been deter
mined from X-ray single-crystal data. This compound is orthorhombic, s
pace group Pnma, with eight formula units per cell and cell parameters
a = 12.756(4), b = 25.514(5), c = 8.035(2) Angstrom. The structure wa
s refined to R-1 = 0.050 and wR(2) = 0.106 using 1013 nonequivalent ob
served reflections [I>2 sigma(I)]. It is composed of isolated BiCl63-
octahedra and of three crystallographically non-equivalent NH4+ cation
s. There is most probably formation of N-H...Cl hydrogen bonds. (NH4)(
3)BiCl6 is isotypic with Rb3BiBr6.
