Two miniaturized growth inhibition assays with Vibrio fischeri and Pse
udomonas putida, based on the German DIN Standards 38 412-37 and 38 41
2-8 are presented. Different calculation modes are compared on the bas
is of measuring toxicological effects (EC50 and EC20 values) of severa
l heavy metals and other reference substances. They demonstrate the hi
gher sensitivity of the Psendomonas putida test. The results point out
the insufficiency of the endpoint calculation mode. Therefore, a modi
fied integral data analysis procedure is recommended. Possibilities an
d limits of the test protocols and kinetic data recordings are discuss
