Two complementary test facilities - the Upper Plenum Test Facility and
the ''Primarkreislauf'' test facility were constructed to investigate
the thermal hydraulic response of a pressurized water reactor during
postulated accidents The general objective of the the experimental pro
grams is to contribute to a better understanding of accident sequences
and to provide a detailed data base for the validation of computer co
des, i.e. ATHLET and RELAP, the latter being used by Siemens/KWU for r
eactor safety analyses A major target of the recent experimental progr
ams has been the verification of accident management procedures, such
as secondary and/or primary side bleed-and-feed. The experimental resu
lts demonstrate that secondary side bleed-and-feed is a very effective
method for removing decay hear without contaminating the containment.
Primary side bleed-and-feed was also shown to be a highly effective m
easure to ensure core cooling under beyond-design-basis conditions. Th
is publication presents results from experiments at the Upper Plenum T
est Facility and the ''Primarkreislauf'' test facility as well as from
corresponding RELAP 5/Mod 2 analyses.
