Abstract
Borrowers with similar earned degrees, marital status, and number of d ependent children exhibit similar levels of income and loan default, r egardless of race or ethnic group. Our research suggests that campuses can best assist their student borrowers by promoting good academic pe rformance and student degree completion and disputes the national poli cy that holds institutions rather than individuals accountable for def ault behavior resulting from factors that are beyond campus control.
