Librarians at the University of Michigan have been involved in HealthW
eb (<http://healthweb.org>) since its origin in late 1993, The challen
ges and opportunities presented by the Internet environment led to the
intellectual development of this grassroots project. As the primary g
oal of developing HealthWeb nears completion, the more than 100 librar
ians involved are planning enhancements for the project to build on th
eir successful collaborative effort. This article focuses on the chall
enges and lessons of developing a model Internet project.
