Abstract
The potential of bacterial markers for the detection of periodontal di sease activity is discussed. Chronic periodontitis has been associated with subgingival bacteria. Techniques are available to detect and dis tinguish different bacteria, In subgingival plaque, bacterial protease s can be detected. Commercial diagnostic tests based on bacterial fact ors are described.
