Abstract
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to study grain boundary mot ion in oxygen films adsorbed on Ru(0001). Starting from an analysis of atomically resolved images of the thermal motion of oxygen atoms with in the grain boundaries, we are able to successfully predict the futur e of complicated configurations of grains involving several hundred th ousand atoms over several hours. The detail to which theory can reprod uce experimental histories shows the precision to which previously hyp othetical models of surface kinetics can now be verified.
