The diagnosis of benign intracranial hypertension (BICH) is a diagnosi
s of exclusion that can be made only if cerebral imaging studies are n
ormal, Three cases are reported in which BICH was diagnosed initially
based on normal physical and computed tomography findings, Cerebral ve
nous thrombosis was subsequently demonstrated, by cerebral angiography
and magnetic resonance angiography in two patients and by a postmorte
m examination in one, Diagnostic criteria for benign intracranial hype
rtension are reviewed with emphasis on the value of angiography and ma
