In the course of bacterial septicemia and meningoencephalitis a 10 mon
ths old girl developed osteomyelitis in the distal epimetaphysis of th
e right tibia, at first clinically unnoticed, which subsequently cause
d a premature fusion of a substantial part of the physis. Following th
is physeal arrest a shortening of the right leg, oblique pelvis and ba
d posture could be observed. Only the increasing angulation of the tal
us led to the X-ray of the right tibia and the result pointed to a cau
sal relation between the septicemia in infancy and the leg shortening.
Discussion: An unilateral growth disturbance of a leg can be the resu
lt of a septicemia many years ago.
