Abstract
Intolerance to cow's milk and soy proteins may produce fussiness, flat us, cramps, vomiting, or colic symptoms in infants. These manifestatio ns may be avoided through the use of human milk. Alternatively, feedin g infants with hydrolyzed formula may alleviate these symptoms. One co rrelate for these changes is the microbiologic colonization of the int estinal tract. This study shows that infants fed a hydrolyzed protein formula for formula intolerance have increased recovery of anaerobes a nd reduction in stool pH that are associated with symptomatic improvem ent.
