I. Balint et al., INVESTIGATION OF 5-PERCENT K BAO2 CATALYTIC-SYSTEM IN METHANE OXIDATIVE COUPLING REACTION/, Revue Roumaine de Chimie, 42(10), 1997, pp. 1009-1017
The paper deals with the oxidative coupling of methane to C-2 hydrocar
bons over potassium doped barium peroxide catalyst in the 973-1113 K t
emperature range. The 5% K/BaO2, catalyst was able to give 8-17% conve
rsion with selectivity to C-2 hydrocarbons of similar to 80%. A remark
able tendency for a high amount of C2H4 formation compared with C2H6 h
as been observed above 1048 K. The C2H6 generation rate depends marked
ly on the pseudo-contact time (W/F) while the CO2 and C2H4 formation r
ate is independent of W/F. Three models (power-law rate, Mars van Krev
elen, and Eley-Rideal) have been used to fit the experimental data. Th
e experimental and kinetic results suggest different pathways for C2H6
and CO2 formation, directly from methane or having a common intermedi
ate (i.e. CH3 .), on different catalytic sites.
