IR spectroscopic investigations were performed of the adsorption and s
urface reactions of CH3Cl over acidic, basic and neutral zeolite catal
ysts. In each case, the spectral changes reflected the appearance of t
he Fermi resonance phenomenon. The resonance parameters determined poi
nted to a decreasing extent of resonance in consequence of the adsorpt
ion. No influence of the acidity of the adsorbents was observed. The f
ormation and consumption of HCl and OH groups were established at elev
ated temperatures. The reactions assumed to have occurred are describe
d and explained.
