This paper assesses whether regional variability in the minority/non-m
inority wage gap exists and if it depends on state-specific factors su
ch as political conservatism, anti-discriminatory policies, and the 'v
isibility' of minorities. We find an extreme variability in the minori
ty/non-minority wage differential across states and that this gap narr
ows as minorities achieve a 'threshold' level which allows them to exe
rt political and economic pressures on majority employers.
