A systematic study on the structural, electrical and magnetic properti
es of the ErFe4Ge2 intermetallic phase was carried out. From scanning
electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and
high temperature electrical resistivity we found that the room temper
ature ferromagnetism may be ascribed to the presence of an impurity of
eutectic composition Fe:Ce=70:30. Low temperature electrical resistiv
ity and magnetisation measurements showed three magnetic transitions a
t 6.5, 21 and 40 K. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
