Ss. Jonnalagadda et al., SUCCESSFUL THERAPY OF BLEEDING DUODENAL VARICES BY TIPS AFTER FAILUREOF SCLEROTHERAPY, The American journal of gastroenterology, 93(2), 1998, pp. 272-274
Hemorrhage from duodenal varices may be severe and life threatening. W
e report a patient with portal hypertension and bleeding duodenal vari
ces caused by cirrhosis oi the liver. Endoscopic sclerotherapy and int
ravenous vasopressin failed to control bleeding in this patient, Hemor
rhage was subsequently controlled by placement of a transjugular intra
hepatic portosystemic shunt. We recommend that in patients with life-t
hreatening hemorrhage from duodenal varices caused by cirrhosis of the
liver, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt be considered in
the management. (C) 1998 by Am. Coll. of Gastroenterology.
