Preserving the emittance during the injection process in an ideal acce
lerator and transfer line is trivial for beams which are transversely
stable (eventually with feedback). To approach as much as possible the
ideal state with a real machine it is sufficient, but not trivial, to
measure the deviations from that state and correct them. The survey o
f the SPS and its injection line in view of transverse emittance conse
rvation leads essentially to a demand for efficient instrumentation an
d implementation of specific measuring strategies.
