Dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) operation at low microwave frequenc
ies has been the subject of much work in recent years. However, the us
e and characteristics of DRAs at millimeter-wave frequencies have not
been explored. DRAs have potential application at millimeter-wave freq
uencies as there is no conductor loss mechanism in the radiating eleme
nt. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation o
f an aperture-coupled DRA element and array that function in the 40 GH
z frequency range. The results presented show that the use of dielectr
ic resonators as antennas can be extended into the millimeter-wave fre
quencies. (C) John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
