We report the data of incidence of IDDM among children aged 0-18 years
in the Province of Florence, in the period from 1991 through 1993. 61
new IDDM cases among the 201,566 resident subjects under 19 years of
age have been Sound and 45 among the 142, 388 resident subjects under
15 years, according to the last National Census. On this basis are def
ined the data of incidence for each group, according to international
rules. As in the standard population we assume equal numbers in each o
f the three age groups and in each sex: 95% Confidence Intervals were
estimated using a Poisson distribution. the probability of ascertainme
nt of the incident cases was evaluated using ''capture- recapture meth
od'' considering as independent primary and secondary sources of the a
scertainment The probability of ascertainment was estimated according
to 99, 7%. The standardised incidence in the age 0-18, results 9,8/100
,000 (11,8/100,000 males, 7,3/100,000 females); the standardised incid
ence, in the age 0-14, results 10,2/100,000 (12,4/100,000 males and 8/
100,000 females).
