A clear understanding and definition of the glaucomas continues to elu
de the clinician. Broadening awareness of the many risk factors in gla
ucoma, the wide variety of presentations of the disease and greater un
derstanding of the pattern of progression will help to improve treatme
nt protocols. In the meantime, the diagnosis and monitoring of the dis
ease remains a huge clinical and financial burden. Modern imaging tech
niques permit quantitative stereometric assessment of the optic nerve
head and nerve fibre layer, affording morphologic evaluation to comple
ment clinical psychophysical investigation. (C) 1998 The College of Op
