Abstract
Laboratory simulations were performed for a zonal flow over a topograp hy in a beta-channel. The measurements were carried out in a rotating cylindrical vessel with a sloping bottom modeling the beta-effect. The zonal flow was created by the source and sink method. The topography inhomogeneity was made as a positive half-period of a sinusoid. The ge neration and dynamics of vortex structures formed in the flow over the topography are examined. A state diagram in the plane vessel rotation -zonal flow velocity is drawn.
