Abstract
A technique is proposed to consider the effect of discrete particles o n backward fluorescent intensities (FI) from phytoplankton in water. A comparison between the backward intensity and the intensity observed at an angle of 90 degrees to the excitation axis is made. It is shown that the relationship between these intensities depends on the optical density of phytoplankton cells. The results obtained explain a number of distinctions in experimental data obtained with fluorometers diffe ring in the optical scheme of FI detection.
