As financial pressures played an ever-increasing role in all aspects o
f academic medicine, economic forecasting and analysis has concurrentl
y increased in prominence. In this unique specialty, Uwe Reinhardt, Ph
D, has long been regarded as a pioneer and leader. Born in Osnabrueck,
Germany, Reinhardt has been at Princeton University since 1968, and c
urrently serves as the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at
Me Woodrow Wilson School of Government. Widely viewed as one of the m
ost knowledgeable health care economists, Reinhardt has played a major
role in formulating novel market-based approaches to health care. Int
