Two samples of subjects (a sample of undergraduate students and a samp
le from the general population) filled out the Self-Monitoring Scale (
Snyder, 1974) and the NEO-PI (Costa & McCrae, 1985). The results showe
d an acquisitive self-monitoring pattern associated with Extraversion
and Openness to Experience, and a defensive self-monitoring pattern as
sociated with Neuroticism. These results support previous research whi
ch has identified two styles of self-presentation (acquisitive vs. def
ensive) and confirm the usefulness of the NEO-PI as a broad instrument
for research in personality. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
