Ultrafine active ZiO(2)-MgO-Y2O3 and ZrO2-MgO-Y2O3-Al2O3 powders with
an MgO content of 13-14 mol.-%, corresponding to the eutectoid composi
tion, were prepared by chemical coprecipitation and sintered at 1550 d
egrees C to give fine grained cubic stabilised zirconia (CSZ) cel cera
mics. By aging at 1100 degrees C, subeutectoid decomposition occurred
and partially stabilised zirconia (PSZ) structural characteristics wer
e achieved. Phase compositions, microstructural changes, and mechanica
l properties versus aging time at 1100 degrees C have been investigate
d and are reported.
