Abstract
We show that the effective complex impedance of materials with conduct ivity and dielectric permittivity that have high contrast can be calcu lated approximately by solving a suitable resistor-capacitor network. We use variational principles extensively for the analysis and we asse ss the accuracy of the network approximation by numerical computations .
