The effect of stroke as a major health issue in the United States is w
ell established. Well-designed epidemiologic studies have contributed
important information about the natural history of stroke and its asso
ciated risk factors. These cerebrovascular profiles have provided the
foundation for many of the current ischemic stroke trials, but the cau
se and prevention of the hemorrhagic subtypes remain elusive.
