Abstract
This self-directed learning module highlights the definitions and diag nosis of acute, subacute, and chronic pain, As part of the chapter on pain in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitione rs and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation, this article contains sections on defining acute, subacute, and chronic pain, subty pe diagnoses, differentiation of pain generators, cost-effectiveness o f diagnostic testing, and the minimum data set necessary prior to trea tment.
