Atomic force microscopy has been used to study structures formed on th
e surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite by the evaporation of
n-hexadecane. The surface is decorated with isolated, irregularly shap
ed features on the terraces and long features associated with steps on
the graphite surface. Some features also show sharp peaks. A model is
