Energy-loss spectra of swift light ions have been calculated by the tr
ansfer-matrix method. An accurate numerical evaluation of a realistic
model for 32 MeV He-3 penetrating carbon foils served as a reference s
tandard. The conventional diffusion approximation has been generalized
to multi-state systems. As a main result we found a representation wi
th an accuracy going significantly beyond that of a sum of Gaussians.
Our results are in good accord with recent experiments on charge-state
-dependent stopping.
