A theoretical model of projectile-surface scattering which includes mu
ltiple collisions is developed using classical mechanical expressions
for the single scattering of atomic-like particles from a many-body ta
rget. Explicit calculations are compared with two examples of recently
measured experimental data: (i) 200 eV Na+ ions reflected from Cu(001
), and (ii) rare gas atoms in the eV energy range scattering from molt
en metals. We show that the classical equations for the scattering pro
bability describe the observed intensities quite well when multiple sc
attering with several target atoms is included.
