Two new methods of dynamic analysis of a coupled dam-reservoir system
have been attempted in order to solve the problem of energy reflection
at the upstream boundary of the reservoir. One is based on a viscous
boundary condition, and the other is based on the principle of coordin
ate transformation. Comparison of these two methods with the tradition
al boundary condition shows that with the coordinate transformation me
thod it is possible to get a good result with a short reservoir, and t
hat use of the viscous boundary given in this paper usually results in
a better solution than use of the traditional boundary condition. A r
ecommendation regarding the application of these methods is given.
