To what extent do differences in biological sex and psychological gend
er identity influence affective reactions to different genres of film?
In order to address this question, this investigation examined the im
pact of sex and gender role self-perceptions on viewers' responses to
neutral, melodramatic, and violent plm segments. Working with a predom
inantly Caucasian population (93% Caucasian) at a southeastern univers
ity, the results emphasize the importance of sex and gender role self-
perceptions on viewers' affective responses to media entertainment The
implications of these findings are discussed.
