Abstract
It is shown that the characteristic equations associated with a partic ular 1 + 1-dimensional anisentropic gas dynamics system may be discret ized in such a way that integrability is preserved. This is achieved b y reinterpreting the Backlund transformation for the classical Tzitzei ca equation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
