N. Meisler et al., IMPACT OF ASSERTIVE COMMUNITY TREATMENT ON HOMELESS PERSONS WITH COOCCURRING SEVERE PSYCHIATRIC AND SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS, Community mental health journal, 33(2), 1997, pp. 113-122
This study evaluated the impact of an integrated (mental health/substa
nce abuse) assertive community treatment program on homeless persons w
ith serious mental and substance use disorders. High rates of retentio
n in treatment, housing stability, and community tenure were attained,
and all but the most severe substance users appeared to gain these be
nefits. While the intervention appears to be an effective means of ret
aining in services and monitoring such difficult-to-treat and costly p
opulations, it did not yield high rates of abstinence and social benef
its in severe users.
