Abstract

The reaction of tert-butyl carbodiimide with one equivalent of (LiNHBu )-Bu-t in tetrahydrofuran at -78 degrees C produces {Li[C((NBu)-Bu-t)( 2)((HNBu)-Bu-t)]}(2) .(THF) (1), which is an eight-membered Li2C2N4 ri ng; the deprotonation of 1 with two equivalents of n-BuLi in tetrahydr ofuran at -78 degrees C and recrystallization of the product from n-pe ntane yielded the unsolvated dimer {Li-2[C((NBu)-Bu-t)(3)]}(2) (2), wh ich has a distorted cyclic ladder structure.
