Based on single case analysis it has been investigated to what extent
therapists engaged in four different forms of therapy (heuristic psych
otherapy, behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis and goal-oriented client-
centered psychotherapy) promote the clarification of motives and affec
tive schemata and to what extent clients cooperate in such clarificati
on processes. Significant differences were noted between the four form
s of therapy in the way such clarification processes are dealt with: T
herapists and clients tackle clarification problems most actively in g
oal-oriented client-centered psychotherapy, followed by heuristic psyc
hotherapy and psychoanalysis whereas these problems are practically un
known in behavioral therapy.
