Plasma-assisted boriding was carried out on low-alloy steels with no s
ubsequent heat treating in order to provide a substitute for high-allo
y steels. It was found that arcing in the glow discharge of a BCl3-H-2
-Ar atmosphere can be retarded by pulsed direct current power and the
discharge current dropped greatly. The growth of boride layer was slow
er than that of conventional boriding and, in addition, the hardness w
as lower. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
